How to Submit a Superbill to Insurance
A Superbill, or a Statement for Insurance Reimbursement, is another word for a detailed receipt of the services you received in therapy. If you are seeing an out-of-network provider for therapy, you maybe able to request a Superbill in order to seek partial reimbursement for the therapy services you receive. Rates for reimbursement depend on your insurance company and policy. Many times, those rates fall within 40-80%. Below you will find an approximate process for submitting a Superbill to your insurance company.
You can call your insurance company and ask for an estimate of how much they will reimburse for out-of-network therapy services before you get started in therapy. Each insurance company differs in how they would like this documentation submitted, be sure to ask about any insurance-specific steps they would like you to complete for reimbursement.
In general you’ll want to:
Visit your insurance company’s website and create a profile if you don’t already have one.
Find where you can “submit a claim online.”
Complete all of the information requested.
Upload a copy of your Superbill (may be called an invoice), issued by your provider. My Superbills will come from SimplePractice, which is the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system I use. Please note that claims do require that I provide a diagnosis.
Make a note that you have already paid your therapist or psychologist and want to be personally reimbursed by your insurance company. It helps to use something attention-grabbing like CAPS so that your request is not missed.
Example: “PROVIDER PAID, PATIENT REIMBURSEMENT REQUESTED).
If asked for provider’s signature, write “see invoice.”
Do not select any prompt or checkbox that asks you to authorize assignment, this will send the reimbursement to the provider, and you want it to come to you!
Follow up with your insurance company for any questions.
